Pearl of the Indian Ocean

The Island of Sri Lanka is known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, A Tropical Island of 65610 km area, the Island responds to a highly diverse ecological condition making it one of the global hotspots for plant life, fauna diversity, coral reef and marine life.

Sri Lanka has an awesome heritage, 2,500 years written and a further pre-historic era. Civilization with ancient Sinhala Kings, Giant man made lakes, Temples , High solid brick domes called Dagabas, Royal Palaces of Ancient Kings, big Statues of Lord Buddhas carved out of rocks are some of the sights in the ancient capitals of Anuradapura and Polonnaruwa.

The Island mainly consists of 04 climatic Zones called Wet zone, Intermediate zone, Dry zone and Arid zone. Geographically, Sri Lanka has 03 main mountain ranges, which are the Central hills, Knuckles range, and the Sabaragamuwa hills. This provides rich habitat diversity to a lot of endemic and rare plants and animals.

This "Pearl of the Indian Ocean" has world famous national parks rich with bio diversity and natural beauty.

Yala and Willpathu national parks situated in the arid zone of the Island are only some of the best places in the world to see Leopards. Minneriya and Kawudulla national park has the highest concentration of Elephant per 1km 2 in Asia in their gathering period.

 

The Cool Horton plains national park, situated in the mountain range of the central hills at a height of 2,535, surrounded by beautiful mountains and grassland, is home to divers kinds of montane fauna and flora. In addition, the World heritage site of Sinharaja , Sri Lanka 's unique primeval rain forest situated in the lowland wet zone of Sri Lanka, has the highest concentration of endemic species in Sri Lanka .

The Island mainly gets rain from two monsoons; from May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the southwest half of the country. While the Maha monsoon blows from November to February bringing rain to the northern and eastern part of the Island .
